Physical Activity
P.E. Equipment
St. Mogue’s N.S.’s Active School’s Committee completed an audit of all P.E. equipment. The committee organised and labelled the P.E. equipment and developed a staff and pupil wish list of potential equipment to be purchased. The Active School’s Committee were appointed as the P.E. storeroom monitors.

Playground Leaders
Being active is so important to our future health. We in St. Mogue’s N.S. want to lay those active foundations at infant level so we extended an invitation to our senior pupils to help us to do so by becoming Playground Leaders. There was great interest from both fifth and sixth classes. After meeting with Ms. Cunningham, our Playground Leaders started their important work with the pupils from our junior and middle rooms during Active School week. The Playground leaders zoned areas of our playground and organised a variety of activities such as traditional playground games, an active dance class, co-operative games, an obstacle course, target practise and athletics-based activities. The children are enjoying every minute of it! Thanks to Mr. Conefrey and our 5th and 6th class pupils, who have been so helpful, generous and responsible in taking on this project.

Active Walkway
We were very excited when Santa opened our school walking and running track in December 2025. This amenity has been used by all classes on a daily basis either for movement breaks or during yard times. It is a fantastic facility and we are very thankful for it and very proud of it!

Our newly opened Running/Walking track is now used, as a section of our Active School Walkway. We really enjoyed mapping its route and wanted to say a big thank you to all involved especially our caretaker Aidan Dolan, who secured the signs on it.
Our walkway is accessible, all-weather, interesting and FUN- especially when we complete the walkway challenges!!

Participation Initiatives
We had such fun participating in the following initiatives this school year:
Skip Around the World
Active Schools Breaks
Active School Week
Skip Around the World:
As part of our Active School programme, we took part in the “Skip Around the World” whole-school challenge from October 3rd to October 24th. This initiative promoted participation, inclusion, and fun, while integrating physical activity into learning. Each class incorporated daily skipping breaks over the three weeks of the challenge. Working together, our collective skips helped us “travel” to famous destinations across the globe! We successfully reached all our target destinations and were really proud of this achievement!

Active Breaks Challenge: January 9th-February 13th
Short classroom movement breaks (1–5 minutes) benefit all children. Research shows they can improve: Movement breaks work best when they are regular, predictable, and inclusive — meaning every pupil can take part in a way that feels safe, comfortable, and meaningful.
Our Active School Committee registered the school for the Active Break Every Day challenge, starting on January 9th and finishing on February 13th. The Active Breaks Challenge for 2026 was supported by the GAA, who, working with the Active School Flag team, created a set of videos to support this initiative. Each video was filmed at a different location around Croke Park, giving pupils a behind-the-scenes look at where the team buses arrive, the players’ dressing rooms, and the warm-up areas where legends get game ready. Along the way, pupils will also learn interesting facts about Croke Park.
We printed and displayed the #ActiveBreaks 26 challenge chart on the outside of our classroom doors and two members of the Active Schools Committee acted as challenge leaders in each classroom. It was their responsibility to tick the challenge chart once their daily movement break has been completed.
The children had great fun taking daily movement breaks, and it was wonderful to see
learning and physical activity combined in such a creative way. Our favourite aspect of this initiative was the pupils getting their opportunity to choose and repeat their favourite challenge every Friday!
